The Google Business Profile checklist.

By Aaron DominicUpdated 5 min read

A complete, accurate and active Google Business Profile is the single most important local ranking asset you control. Work through this list once, then keep the profile alive with photos, posts and replies. Most local businesses have a profile that was set up once and never touched; this is how to make yours the exception.

Is the profile claimed and verified?

Search your business name on Google Maps and check you can manage the listing. If there is a duplicate listing, request its removal or merge; duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google. Verification is usually by video or postcard and must be completed before most edits show publicly.

Is the primary category exactly right?

Choose the single most specific category that describes your main service: "Emergency plumber" rather than "Plumber" if that is the work you want, "Chiropractor" rather than "Health consultant". Add secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer. The primary category is the strongest relevance signal on the profile, and the most common thing we fix.

Are your services, description and attributes complete?

List each service you offer as a separate item, in the words customers use. Write a description that says what you do and where, in plain English, without keyword stuffing. Complete every attribute that applies: accessibility, payment types, appointment links. An incomplete profile ranks below a complete one with otherwise equal signals.

Are your hours, phone and website correct?

Hours including bank holidays, because being open at the time of the search is a ranking factor. A phone number that is answered. A website link to a page that works on a phone. Your name, address and phone exactly as they appear on your website and in directories.

Have you set your service area correctly?

If you travel to customers, set the areas you genuinely cover and hide your address if you work from home. Do not claim areas you cannot serve; it dilutes relevance and can lead to suspension. If customers come to you, show your address and keep it accurate.

Are you adding photos and posts?

Real photos of your work, your team and your premises, added regularly rather than once. Posts for offers, news and completed projects keep the profile active. Active profiles are favoured over dormant ones, and the photos are what customers look at before they call.

Are reviews arriving and being answered?

A steady flow of recent reviews is the fastest lever on the profile, and every review should get a reply. If you are not asking customers systematically, this is the first thing to change. Never buy, incentivise or filter reviews; the penalties are severe and the profile is the asset at risk.

What gets profiles suspended?

Keyword stuffing in the business name, a virtual office or PO box address, claiming areas you do not serve, multiple profiles for one location, and review manipulation. A suspension can take weeks to resolve and you lose visibility throughout. Keep the profile honest and it stays up.

Quick answers.

Should I put keywords in my business name?

No. Your profile name must match your real-world business name. Adding "Best Plumber Croydon" to it breaches the guidelines and is one of the most common reasons for suspension.

How often should I update the profile?

Photos and posts at least monthly, hours whenever they change, and a review of categories and services every few months. Replies to reviews within a day or two.
