How to rank higher on Google Maps.

By Aaron DominicUpdated 6 min read

Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change where you are, but you can choose the right primary category, complete and maintain your Business Profile, earn a steady flow of recent reviews, keep your details consistent across the web, and build a website that names the places you serve. That is the whole recipe.

What decides who appears in the map pack?

Google names three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, which is mostly your categories and services. Distance is how close you are to the searcher or the place they named. Prominence is how well known and well regarded you are, which is where reviews, mentions and your website come in. Practitioner surveys in 2026 put most of the top map-pack factors inside the Business Profile itself.

Which part of my profile matters most?

Your primary category. It is the single strongest signal of what you do, and a wrong or vague one keeps you out of searches you should appear for. Choose the most specific category that describes your main service, add relevant secondary categories, and list your individual services. Then complete everything else: description, hours including holidays, phone, website, service area and photos.

How much do reviews affect map ranking?

Significantly. Google's guidance says review count and score factor into ranking, and recency and your responses matter too. A steady flow of recent reviews from real customers, each with a reply, is the fastest controllable lever for most local businesses. Reviews that mention your service and your town also reinforce relevance.

Does my website affect the map pack?

Yes. Google reads the website linked from your profile to understand what you do and where. A site with a page for each service and each area you serve, consistent name, address and phone, and structured data about the business supports the profile and helps you rank in the organic results below the map as well.

What is NAP consistency and why does it matter?

Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere: your website, your Business Profile, and every directory or listing. Inconsistent details make Google less confident about which business you are. Fix the big directories first, then anything your customers actually use.

How long does it take?

Profile changes and new reviews can show within days to a few weeks. A new or rebuilt web page takes weeks to be indexed and settle. Competitive terms take months of consistent work. Anyone promising a position in a set time is guessing; what you can commit to is the inputs, measured monthly.

Also asked

Quick answers.

Can I rank in the map pack for a town I am not based in?

Rarely, because distance is one of the three factors. You can rank in the organic results for that town with a genuinely useful page, and you can set a service area on your profile, but the map pack favours businesses physically near the searcher.

Do Google Posts help ranking?

Indirectly. They keep your profile active, which Google favours, and they give searchers something current to see. They are not a primary ranking factor on their own.
